English pronunciation and accent

Accent is crucial for English pronunciation. English has a much clearer intonation than Japanese. When Japanese people speak English, they won't be understood if their accent isn't correct. English education has become increasingly popular recently, but when learning English in a group, some children may become timid and unable to express themselves, depending on their personality. Once they enter junior high school, English grammar becomes more important than conversation, so they have fewer opportunities to be conscious of accent. It's a good idea to create an environment where children can get their ears and mouths used to English accents from a young age. You can train their ears from infancy (around 6 months old), and they absorb things much faster when they are young.
To acquire a correct accent, repeated practice of listening to a lot of English (input) and speaking aloud (output) is essential. Nowadays, there are plenty of tools available, such as video websites and CDs, so utilizing them can be effective. However, input alone is not enough to master English; you need an environment where you can output. Aim to acquire usable English by using it in conversations and play related to real life, and by consciously speaking with a correct accent.

When should I start learning English?

The purpose of English education varies depending on the child's developmental stage. Children are sensitive to sounds, and it is generally believed that starting English early is beneficial. However, it is also said that early English education can confuse children. For young children, language is simply the language they can understand, and they don't recognize it as Japanese or English. Language is the language they use to communicate with the people around them. The following illustrates the importance of the surrounding environment. When raising a bilingual child in a Japanese family, the environment is crucial.

・From 6 months old: This is the time to increase the number of sounds the baby can hear through input.
Of course, children at this age cannot speak, but their ears begin to distinguish and understand various sounds. Getting them accustomed to English sounds from this age will train their ears to distinguish English, and inputting sounds will improve their pronunciation in the future. Also, children may not respond to audio from CDs alone, so we recommend listening to "audible," real English.

・Ages 2 and up: The time when children begin to like and become interested in English.
Children learn words by repeatedly saying simple greetings and phrases. They become engrossed in repeating the same words (for example, "Hello!"), so parents should join in and have fun. Also, trying to teach English at this stage may discourage them, so the focus should be on introducing them to English in a fun, playful way.

Ages 5 and up: A period for outputting English through frequent conversation.
Around this age, children become interested in what you're talking about, and they'll want to share their thoughts freely. You might want to try changing your approach to suit their interests, such as playing with the alphabet or reading picture books.

The important thing is to keep going. In order to solidify your English skills in the future, it is necessary to maintain the English you learned at a young age. When learning English, it is important to be exposed to "living" English. However, once the environment in which you converse in English ends, you will return to your original Japanese-speaking life.

As a parent, it's important not to have overly high expectations. On the other hand, when children are motivated, their ability to concentrate is remarkable, and their language acquisition skills are particularly high. Praise them when they are motivated, and when they lose motivation, accept that it's just not the right time and wait for them to become motivated again. It's important for parents to believe in their children and create an environment that fosters their motivation.

The future of society and the necessity of English

English education has become as popular as piano and swimming lessons in recent years. But why is English so essential?
Companies are increasingly hiring foreign nationals as full-time employees, and it's not uncommon for meetings to be conducted entirely in English. Following this trend, it's not unusual for companies to require English proficiency as a hiring condition. Naturally, parents would want their children to learn English for their future.

There are many benefits to learning English. If your child asks why they want to learn English, you can tell them about the joy of being able to talk to different people in English.

1. Broadens your perspective
Using English makes it easy to communicate with foreigners and expand your social circle. Communicating with various people has positive effects, such as helping children develop into sociable and cheerful individuals. As they get a little older, they begin to question foreign cultures and ways of thinking, further broadening their horizons.

2. It will be useful in various situations in the future.
In Japanese society, English proficiency is increasingly important. For example, companies often ask about TOEIC scores during job interviews, and these scores can sometimes be a requirement for employment or promotion. Even after joining a company, being proficient in English expands the range of work you can be entrusted with. Therefore, while English is not absolutely essential, it is definitely better to acquire it.

3. You gain confidence.
Many people who learned English as a child for entrance exams seem to have an inferiority complex about speaking English. Since 2011, English has been a compulsory subject in elementary school. If children become even slightly accustomed to speaking English before they are suddenly confronted with it in elementary school and develop a negative attitude towards it, they can gain confidence.

One of PV International School's goals is to help students take their first steps in communicating in English with people from different cultures and backgrounds. To achieve this, it's important to expose children to English in their daily lives. We hope that this will help them naturally internalize the language and grow into adults who can converse confidently and on equal footing with anyone.
